bit.ly Blog: Bento Box - Front Page Redesign

  • ravendon · 5 months ago
The new "design" sucks. It's confusing having a line to enter text and another line below where the new shortened url appears. But, this field isn't always there or greyed out. So it looks exactly like an input window. And the results field at the bottom is shortened. Also in order to input another url, you can't hit shorten another link anymore. You have to hit the home button. Otherwise, it loads up the last link and comment. I'm very dissappointed and will use another service.
  • lehrblogger · 5 months ago
Sorry you're having trouble with bento box - which field is it that you are seeing as greyed out?

Also, you should be able to enter a URL in the top shorten box, shorten it, do whatever you want with the shortened URL, and then shorten another without having to reload the page. We eliminated the "shorten another" button to simplify shortening multiple URLs, but if this isn't working properly in your browser then we are eager to figure out why.

We're aware of the bug in which the Share box doesn't clear properly, and should have a fix out soon.

I am also getting 2 URLs in the share box. I have to delete one URL each time I want to Post. Sometimes I even get two different sets of remarks. I am using Google Chrome.

I hate, hate, hate this new interface. Hate it. Did I mention I hate it. You just took something easy to do and made it complicated. Why would you do this? Do you do usability testing? If not, start. I know you mean well, but you just ruined my day.
  • andreas h. · 5 months ago
It's my first stay here. I didn't know the old one. I think for a newbie this site is good. And I don't have a problem with the usability.

    I like it.
  • Steve Mindsix · 5 months ago
Good job! I like it! ;-)
  • David Sanger · 5 months ago
Custom URL's seem to have disappeared even when logged in. Is this a bug?
  • Intel_Eric · 5 months ago
I agree with David - where is the Custom URL box? I can't find it anywhere :(

I don't love or hate the new interface (can't tell the difference), but I prefer the old one if it means I can make custom URLs
  • BjornTipling · 5 months ago
Check out the 'rename' box after you submit a link.
  • cammaert · 5 months ago
I can not see the rename box. Do you have to be logged in?
  • confuxed · 5 months ago
Same here. No "rename" box anywhere...? This was bit.ly's USP to me -- where's it gone??
  • Andrys · 5 months ago
You guys should have said something about it. It's the first thing I do, including at other urlshorteners. No one would guess that it comes up later - not intuitive.

Outside of that I've no thoughts about the new interface. I've noticed that click numbers at the left are harder to find now but I expect that's to keep calc time shorter and to lower the load times.

I've admired the way you handle support here but the announcement that told almost nothing really was not good. I had to look and look to see if something had happened or whether my noscript was causing something not to show.

As it is, I log each nickname, since for some reason you don't display something so important to us and have not made it a thing you'll do. That's perplexing because it causes a lot more work for us.

But again, thanks for responding here.
  • Andrys · 5 months ago
Update: Click numbers at left for recent shortened links are back, I see. I guess they were missing for awhile due to the changes.

You've gotten rid of the option to make a custom link.

    Not good, IMHO

FWIW, I'm a singer-songwriter, and that function came in really handy for multiple purposes in the music biz.
  • BjornTipling · 5 months ago
Once you bit.lyfy a URL a rename option comes up. That does the job.
  • Gordy Thomas · 5 months ago
Okay...cool...that works. So I vote yes on your new interface if it's what floats your boat.

Still you've added a step to the process I was using...that's not great, but I can live with it.
  • Aniruddh D · 5 months ago
I like the new interface..it's good but much similar to the old one.

Well not able to see custom url box in the new interface.

I like, that we can add multiple twitter accounts. make them oAuth Enable..

    Thanks

ive been thinking about the custom name issue - what about squatters? wrote a long thought piece on this here: http://bit.ly/YIxMX
  • Shostie · 5 months ago
I do miss the ability to simply press CTRL+C after I generate a shortened link. Now it seems that I actually have to click on this "COPY" button or highlight the field.
  • kinglatino · 5 months ago
err um what happened to the custom url???
  • lehrblogger · 5 months ago
You can still add a custom keyword URL, but the option is only currently available for logged in users after the long URL has been shortened (see the 'Rename' box). We've had a lot of requests for that functionality as it was before, and we plan to add it back in very soon.
  • graubart · 5 months ago
One more vote for restoring the old method on the custom URL.
I do a lot of UI/usability stuff and the new method is definitely "designed by developers" not by users. Not at all intuitive.
The rest of the Bento Box design is OK but please fix this ASAP. Took me 10 minutes, 2 google searches and 2 tweets to find out how to do this. Yikes

I thought it was an elegant change to a cumbersome problem. I can even select from my linked accounts which I was unable to discover as a user.
  • Name · 5 months ago
I'm using MSIE6. I can't find how to give my small link a custom name.
  • retorik · 5 months ago
/me like that.. after first look i was dissapointed, but then.. :) keep on good work!
  • MaryP · 5 months ago
Can I no longer request a specific shortened version as I did in the past? Where did it go?
  • lehrblogger · 5 months ago
Hi Mary - you can still request a specific version of a bit.ly URL, but the option is only currently available for logged in users after the long URL has been shortened (see the 'Rename' box). We've had a lot of requests for that functionality as it was before, and we plan to add it back in very soon.
  • MaryP · 5 months ago
    Thanks!

I figured it out as I read down on the various blogs. I'm happy that I can still do it!

    Thanks again!

It's two months later and there is no "Rename" or "custom url" function, even when signed in.
  • lehrblogger · 2 months ago
hmm, we still have that functionality, and it would be odd if you weren't seeing it. Have you tried clicking on the "Share on Twitter" link just below the URL? There should be a Custom Name box that appears. If that still doesn't work, email us at support@bit.ly with information about your browser, operating system, installed plugins, and maybe a screenshot or two and we'll figure out what the problem is.

I do like the new bento box design. It's intuitive and pretty. I think many of the complaints would go away if you'd let people know that you can designate a custom URL *after* shortening. bit.ly continues to be my Twitter client of choice. Thanks for the upgrade.
  • sidepodcast · 5 months ago
no custom alias, without being logged in?

    *goes back to tinyurl.com*
  • lehrblogger · 5 months ago
We've had a lot of requests for the custom alias functionality as it was before, and we plan to add it back in very soon.
  • sidepodcast · 5 months ago
    thanks you.

    hi,i'm a new comer,please add my blog
  • SilknPearls · 5 months ago
It no longer allows me to delete links from my page that I no longer care about. Otherwise, I can live with the changes.
  • Vi · 4 months ago
Where is the custom name ????
    I liked it.
I use it to keep all my links as bookmarks
  • lehrblogger · 4 months ago
To Vi and everyone else who has asked about the custom name box (and might be subscribed to these comments but not the blog) - we've listened to your feedback and made it more like it was before. More info at http://blog.bit.ly/post/150264257/bento-box-int...

    Great !
I was close to start using tinyurl, but I will stay with bit.ly ! :)
  • Veejay · 4 months ago
I can't work out how to find what urls I have shortened, and what I have shortened them to.
  • lehrblogger · 4 months ago
What is your username on bit.ly? Try looking below the bento box on the main bit.ly page, or going to http://[YOUR_USERNAME].bit.ly to see your history.
