You asked: Why would anyone follow a spammer ... the point is, that yesterday's spam was sending that often the same sequence over twitter that the term "pirates" was on twitters short-cut-list (don't know how they call the list with the most used terms that is shown in the right box).
So this was of course an invitation to check why this term was twittered that often. WOT (Web of Trust) had the linked page already on their list of bad sites. So maybe a cooperation with them could be a helpful addition to bit.ly - Let's say if it is marked as dangerous on WOT, don't directly link to that page, but display a warning instead, where the user has to click again before being redirected.
