bit.ly Blog: Go ahead and j.mp

  • David Catalano · 3 months ago
Is this a precursor to white label bit.ly service? I certainly hope it is as I have recently paid $350 for mod.cm (modea.com shortened). A jip??? Maybe, but shortened URLs are here to stay and it is important that companies can brand their own URLs yet retain the incredible feature set available with bit.ly.

On the thought of branding, I'm not sure that I agree with branding j.mp. Even though bit.ly is the most popular url shortener it is a young and unknown brand. Be careful not to create confusion.

Keep us posted on that white label service!

Is there anywhere in the bit.ly or j.mp websites that shows or confirms what custome name you have selected for a shortened url? If not is this something that can be implemented. cheers. :-)
  • Bitter · 3 months ago
I was wondering what the heck that was about when I clicked on my Bit.ly browser bar and got a j.mp link this morning. I scoured the internet and your blog for any references, but I figured it was something bizarre going on so I held off on my tweet until it went back to bit.ly. Just a heads up if you plan to unroll a new service that it's probably better to announce it, then implement it. :)

great move bit.ly ... you continue to come through on the promise of a bright future we saw when you got that funding

way to port all this 'on top' of the current bit.ly system....
  • Joe Lazarus · 3 months ago
Cool. In case you didn't notice, the "tools" on j.mp like the sidebar bookmarklet still point to Bit.ly. I edited my version, but thought you might want to update it for everyone else.

    Keep up the great work!

  • mozunk · 3 months ago
    You can already do that.

Great, thanks. Now, I've got two more characters but Van Halen stuck in my head. Did I say thanks? JUMPing off the deep end. Thanks.
  • earthgecko · 3 months ago
Thanks for j.mp it given me a simple idea to SAVE 7 characters per tweet!!! Please check out the #NOHTTP hashtag. twitter dropping the http:// from all URL shortener domains and using an inpage A HREF instead.

    http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23NOHTTP

You just saved us 2 chars, they could save another 7 quite easily.

Doing this as the BBC Digital Revolution asked for idea for web experiments, so :)

But the idea was born out of j.mp

Thanks for the 2 extra chars ppl

J.mp is a nice domain, it has a clearer meaning than the bit.ly domain. Looking forward to using it!
  • DebbyBruck · 3 months ago
I'll give it a try. Sounds like there will be a transition period to test out the service for bugs. Thank you for the savings.

Unfortunately, when using the mobile interface, even if the bookmarklet is using "m.j.mp" (and one is logged in), the link it generates still starts with "bit.ly/"!

  • jonconnelly · 3 months ago
Actually, when using j.mp mobile, it still generates a j.mp url, its just that it only displays the bit.ly url. All you need to do is copy, paste, and replace bit.ly with j.mp, and the shortened URL will work fine.

For screenshots, feel free to take a look at these I threw up - http://j.mp/eZGlf
  • Andrys · 3 months ago
This is nice, even if it's only for max length situations and bit.ly still prevails as actual shortcut URL.

But right now, only the aggregate total shows, and not our own clicked shortcuts.
They do show up in the bar graph though.
  • Isaac | GoBlogger · 3 months ago
Wew, that is real short! Can it get any shorter?
  • NickAtFlare · 3 months ago
Oh just think of the possibilities....2 more characters ...longer verbs, more expressive profanities, 2 extra zeros on a price quote to a client, punctuation or 2 kisses. What else could you do?
  • Name · 3 months ago
Does this now allow our custom URL to show in the history (vs. the hash)? That is the most important feature about naming that I can think of.

Does bit.ly make a WP plugin that tweets my posts automatically into twitter - and if you don't, could you PLEASE make one?
  • Kersheys · 3 months ago
Twitter Tools is a plugin available for WP and automatically tweets your posts (if you set it to do so) and includes a bit.ly URL. Very useful :) Maybe they'll include j.mp in future updates.
  • Gimeti · 3 months ago
I like the fact that it will work as bit.ly url as well. Hpefully plugins for wordpress and other platform will implement this new shortener.

    Cheers

I LOVE j.mp! What a lovely name! Thanks for this service.
  • N-Designs · 3 months ago
    wow. thanks.
  • sascha_o · 3 months ago
j.mp is just brilliant. Not for the two chars you gain, but it sounds way cooler. I hope the iPhone Twitter Clients will integrate this soon. Keep on the good work and get us more of these cool url shorteners. The fact that j.mp and bit.ly is compatible is a great plus. Well thought and well done!

Can't login to j.mp using my bit.ly credentials. Any suggestions?

Love it! Mostly for the Van Halen tagline, but still.
You folks are the best. When are you going to provide a private label version for your friends?

Thanks much. You folks are truly THE innovators in short URL's.

  • Aviva · 3 months ago
You've answered my prayers! Praise j.mp!
  • Alain Lesage · 3 months ago
I love it too and got an account. One remark, tough : the bit.ly preview add-on for firefox does not show previews of j.mp links. Probably something the developers could easily correct.

I use bit.ly all the time, without any problems, most of the time. Tonight I posted a petition, supporting Public Option in the health care reform debate, on Twitter using bit.ly and it worked at first but within 10 minutes or so, I started hearing back from my followers that the link took them to a page with a warning about "unsolicited content".
As you know, on Twitter, people have to read the post and decide on if they wan to click on the link or not. I do not sell things, and I do not force people to open links. I do tell them what it is, in the same tweet. So why would you mark the petition and link as something people should be afraid of?
Please repair this! If someone reported it as such, it would only be because they are against everyone having health care. And that should not be a reason for 'you' to making unqualified, insulting and incorrect comments about my posts, links or attempts to help the American people.
    Here is the link: http://bit.ly/16Ubpx
  • ThisWebsiteSucks · 3 months ago
EileenLeft, I think bit.ly do not flag individual short links but a whole site. Maybe someone spammed that website so bit.ly thinks it is unsolicited content.

    http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showpost.php?p...

    converted to

http://bit.ly/SUA which is the current link to my blog

    but change the input from:
    http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showpost.php?p...

to whatever the new url location is

Further, since the blog is all menu driven, I use 1,000's of bit.ly shorted links

I want to retain the original bit.ly urls for about 250 existing bit.ly links

there will be 100's of 1,000's of bit.ly links used in this blog
I need to move my blog to it's own website

I want to continue to use http://bit.ly/SUA, along with the other 249, or so

please get back to me, and tell me that this can be arranged

j.mp - haha only found this site today, very cool idea, i'm looking forward to implementing it!
  • Mike Gale · 1 month ago
I can't automatically log into j.mp using IE8, though I can with Firefox.

It's a protection mechanism in IE. It disallows cookies to some URL's.

I haven't yet found a way to fix it. The normal mechanism for allowing cookies for a single site fails. It rejects the *.mp domain.

Anybody found a solution for that yet?
