bit.ly Blog: History Upgrades and File Uploads

  • Jose · 2 months ago
I would really like to be able to search the history of shortened links.
Sometimes I wan't to revive a link and going through the history is extremely annoying.
  • joshmchugh · 2 months ago
Yes please! +1 for this - bit.ly has become my default bookmarking service, but needs to be searchable.
  • jonconnelly · 2 months ago
Finally, saving of custom short URLs! No more importing into a Google Docs Spreadsheet!

Would be great to be able to sort our shortened URLs other than chronologically.
  • Colin Warwick · 2 months ago
Enhancement request: Ability to organize groups of shortened links into folders.
  • toddml · 2 months ago
    It's coming, stay tuned. :)
  • acreade · 1 month ago
I would like to see who clicked on my tweets.
  • Adam · 2 months ago
It would be great if it was possible to see the exact time each tweet was made..maybe you could link directly to each tweet?
  • Jim · 2 months ago
Sorting by popularity as well as the default chronological history would be great. Folders would be useful, as would be tags
  • DB-Elements · 2 months ago
These are great enhancement ideas. I would love to see an option that lets you archive shortened URL's, so I don't have to delete URL's to keep things tidy.
  • nathan · 2 months ago
Enhancement request: Download a delimited file that contains the shortened link, the long link, date, time, clicks, and conversations. I'm updating our Twitter Tracking spreadsheet and having a devil of a time tying our tweets to the bit.ly link that was tweeted.

Is it possible to shorten the same URL twice with 2 different custom names in order to track how the URL does in 2 different email campaigns? I must be doing it wrong because it isn't working properly.

I've only just started using the API on j.mp - are API generated links not meant to show up in the history then? (because they aren't for me)
  • BradI · 2 months ago
I am having this problem with the API key too. I've tried resetting it and clearing cache &cookies. Is there any way to make it work?
  • OtavioCC · 2 months ago
    Same here.
  • jmormond · 1 month ago
You need to add a switch on to the API call that includes it in your history. It is in the API docs somewhere.

add "&history=1" to the end of your URL call (no quotes).

What are the file size requirements? or size limits?
  • toddml · 2 months ago
"Each image you upload must be less than 1.5 megabytes in size. If it
is greater than that amount, your image will be optimized for internet
use. Flash files will be rejected if they are over 1.5 mb. Video files
must be less than 50MB and they will be automatically optimized by the
    ImageShack toolbar before uploading."
  • jonconnelly · 2 months ago
Actually, I just upload a test image, 3.41Mb with a resolution of 4272x2848, visited my link, viewed full size image, downloaded, same size and resolution. Didn't even resize it at all.

    BTW link is http://j.mp/U0C6v

    Great ideas!
  • phitzer · 2 months ago
I'm getting duplicate entries for bit.ly links on my main account page - in fact, links are showing up three and four times in a row - anyone that knows how to fix this, please let me know at indierockcafe (at) gmail (dotcom). Thanks
  • jonconnelly · 2 months ago
Im getting the same thing, I deleted them and they're gone now.

    NM, they're back! See http://j.mp/4b5t6w

Can we upload a doc file? (I see that pdf is supported)

    TIA!

why can't I see URLs that I shortened via the toolbar in my history? I created to URLs last night and wanted to use them this morning, but they are not here?
  • Matthias Heil · 2 months ago
Can we *please* have more file formats (or at least ZIP)? I prefer a simple solution for Twitter uploads, and up to now this is still FileSocial.com - bit.ly would win me over by equalling their offer...

Is it possible to add the ability to sort activity by volume of activity? And I'd love an API that dynamically updated most popular tweets on my blog.
  • sullof · 2 months ago
I'm starting to develope a new web app that needs an API method that receives a long_url and returns all the hashes associated to that long_url. I think that it is very simple to add that functionality. Is it in the planning?
  • Ian · 2 months ago
A lot of new features to use, thanks guys. Hope to figure out how to use the service to it's full potential. Not sure why we would need to post media files though. Can someone tell me ?
  • Mike Gale · 2 months ago
Up till yesterday I got multiple listings of the same URL. Today I only get the latest URL, the others have vanished.

When are the kinks likely to have beensorted out?
  • Mike Gale · 2 months ago
I have the other listing back. My automatic logon didn't work.
  • Shekhar Sahu · 2 months ago
The history updates for the same link is shown many times saying same 4 out of 4 , 4 out of 4 ,4 out of 4.
like that, It's quit irritating. Please fix it
  • Otavio · 2 months ago
    Hi,

If I create a link using the API (user+key) shouldn´t it be on my history?
  • Danny Tuppeny · 2 months ago
It'd be good if the "Your Top x bit.ly bits" used the custom names we've put into the history page. Many of my links go to the World of Warcraft Forums. I've given better names in the history page, but the "Top x list" just shows "World of Warcraft..." :-(
  • rocksonico · 2 months ago
Hi, the history would be great if you could have a search box, to look for special links, or as mentioned below, using folders so you can put there links used most.

Also more listing options, popularity, date, info, etc...

    Thanks
  • Marcel · 2 months ago
    Very interesting.

    Thanks

I am very happy with Bit.ly - I can't believe I wasn't using your services before. The tracking of tweets is very powerful, and a great tool for marketing. Looking forward to all of the new features.
    Keep up the good work!
  • Leah · 2 months ago
I would love to use the features too, but every time I stry to sigh up, I get a message saying there was an error, try again.
  • ha1 (bit.ly username) · 1 month ago
One of bit.ly's great features was that if ever one made a bit.ly link of something they'd done previously, the link, though the same, would "rise to the top" of one's listings, and be as readily accessible as any other one recently made. Would love to see this functionality return.
  • cedarman · 1 month ago
Yeah, me too. This would be VERY useful.
  • sam · 1 month ago
Filter Ip and have unique views vs total views. It would be great if I could filter out my own ip as well as have the number of unique views in addition to the total views.
  • Pliggs · 1 month ago
When I shorten a URL via your API, it shows up in the sidebar under "Your Top 5 bit.ly bits", but they do not show up in my history stream.

Is this normal now? How do I fix this?
  • Pliggs · 1 month ago
Ok, found out why it wasn't appearing in the history, you need to add

    &history=1

to the end so it would be

    http://api.bit.ly/shorten?version=2.0.1&longUrl=http://cnn.com&login=bitlyapidemo&apiKey=R_0da49e0a9118ff35f52f629d2d71bf07&history=1

    Hopefully that helps someone out.

I cannot download the bit.ly preview 1.265 for Firefox from addons.mozilla.org. now.
I get "Add-on not found!" message file from addons.mozilla.org server.
    Please confirm it.
  • chuckab · 1 month ago
Why is there a difference between bit.ly stats and my blog stats? For example, bit.ly will show 20 clicks and the blog may show 5 views.
  • cedarman · 1 month ago
I am not seeing multiple entries in the history list for shortened links. I have tried to make this happen, but I still have to scroll down the list for info on links that are used more than once.
  • affisteve · 1 month ago
The text says "The new system acts a bit more like an event log (or your browser history) in that shortening the same URL multiple times will result in multiple history entries which will remain in their original chronological order unless you decide to delete them from your history."

And I used to see this until a couple of weeks ago now I never see repeated URL's in my history. It only appears the very first time it is created.
  • Dinesh · 3 weeks ago
I have just signed in and found that its really helpful to shorten your URL and keep a track of all clicks as well
