When I install &lt;a href="http://bit.ly" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" title="bit.ly"&gt;bit.ly&lt;/a&gt; preview extension for Firefox 3.5.2, and then browse any secure site, I always get a bang next to the padlock, indicating insecure content on page. I remove the extension and the behavior becomes correct - secure. This is for days now.
